I had a problem with my Windows Defender giving me the following error code: 0X80240022 when it tried to update. I was also unable to download updates for XP, and office through the browser.
To solve it I went to start> programs > administrative tools > services.
Then restarted both automatic updates and background intelligent transfer service. (right click them and choose restart).

It worked. Thank you!
Worked for me too!!Cheers
Solved my problem. THANKS
Most other sites try to sell a registry cleaner.
I had to follow a different path to get, to services
start > control panel > administrative tools > services
Then do restarts.
It worked for me too. Even after countless hours dealing with Microsoft tech support and being scammed by all the “regfix” software programs. Much appreciated!!
Thank you for your services
This worked like a charm, great info man
Thank you Man!

I’ve just had the same issue with Microsoft Forefront Client Security(FCS) , It includes defender. It would update via Windows Update but I got the 0x80240022 error from within the FCS console and an MPSampleSubmission Event ID 5000 in the Application Log in Event Viewer:
Event Type mptelemetry, P1 80240022, P2 processdownloadresults, P3 download, P4 1.5.1972.0, P5 mpsigdwn.dll, P6 1.5.1.1972.0 P7 microsoft forefront client security, P8 NIL, p9 Nil, P10 NIL.
Having tried all suggestions without success I Installed .NET framework 1.1 and now all is fine.
OMG…THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
I have been trying everything and this information fixed the problem!

Worked for me too. Under Vista64 the service ‘automatic updates’ is named ‘windows update’ though!
windows update refuses to install even with the firewall down.
this really blows.
Whooow! Thanks!
sorry man, i did exactly what you said but im still getting the same problems, i see it worked for everyone else so would it be possible that there is a special case of sorts?
sorry for my previous post but i found that you also require to have at least 50 MB or so of memory left on your computer for 0x80240022 to be fixed
Worked like a charm!
Only thing to add is that this fix may not work until you also restart your computer after restarting both of the services.
Thanks for posting this easy solution!
This procedure worked for me also. I was originally getting a 0x80080005 error trying to download Microsoft security updates. The log file referenced error 0x80240022. I rebooted and the fix worked. Thanks for the help!!!
This is one of many fixes I have tried in order to clear this error which is driving me crazy!
Damn. It did not work for me.
Thank you so much error was driving me crazy and now its fixed thank you again. Terry
I have Windows 7 and can’t find automatic updates or background intelligent transfer service. I’m a novice at computers.

Genius!!
Took me a minute or 2 to find Administrative tools. I right clicked start & chose to customise the start menu. Found admin tools & added it to the program list, then followed your instructions. Windows 7 is the same as Vista & you need to look for Windows update.
Thanks
Tried this 5 or 6 times & still get the same error..
i use windows xp but i couldn’t find the administrative tools n services. anyone can explain it to me what should i do to find this administrative tools n services?
Great job! Thanks for that.
If you are on Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 hold the Windows Key down on your keyboard (it is between ctrl and alt) and hit R at the same time. It should open a RUN box
type services.msc and hit enter on your keyboard.
In the list that shows up, find Background Int………, right click it and choose restart
Rinse and repeat for Automatic Updates, if it’s not there, look for Windows Updates and try that.
i have problem with the antivirus Microsoft forefront client security it does not update the antivirus definition and anti spyware and if i going to update manually something appear “error found code 0x80240022”.
