10 reasons the suburbs rule
——————–

August 1, 2003

1. Parking. Don’t laugh, it matters.

2. More room. Ever get the urge to wander through wide open spaces? And no, we’re not talking about the empty Toys R Us store on State Street.

3. The high taxes. Because forking over to the government each month what you used to pay in rent says, “I’m somebody.” (It also pays for the schools.)

4. Fine dining. No, really. There is more than just Olive Garden these
days. And there’s always parking.

5. Malls. Tell me you’d rather be walking on Michigan Avenue on a
Saturday.

6. The urban feel. Some suburbs — Oak Park, Evanston, even downtown Elmhurst — are actually more “urban” than many city neighborhoods.

7. Pfingsten Road. We just like the name.

8. Park districts. Amazing but true: They don’t have to be marginally
useful patronage havens. Some actually function as a kind of slick,
suburb-wide health club.

9. Bigger yards. Try planting a tree on the balcony of your $400,000
condo.

10. More mini-vans and SUVs. And the exciting people who drive them.
